The Anoka Jingle Bell Run 5K Race Report!

Hi everyone! I am back from a little blogging break. Thank you to everyone who left me kind comments on my last post. I appreciate it more than you know. Life has been so incredibly busy between work, kid's activities and everything else. I have not been running much because of the lack of time. I also think that I needed a little break to recharge and refresh. This morning I drove into Anoka to run in the Jingle Bell 5K. I ran this race last year and was able to pull a 2nd place age group win:) I knew that today would be challenging because of my lack of training and the colder temperatures.
This picture was taken in the field house where my bib and t-shirt pickup was. I was bib number 277!! Lucky girl, my favorite number is seven:) I attempted to take more pictures but my camera's battery died....nice ! Once I got home, I put a new battery in. I noticed that my almost five year old got a hold of my camera. There were several pictures of our computer.....he was watching Spiderman on Netflix:) There was also about 20 pictures of himself....no wonder the battery died!
The race started at 10 AM and it was about 15 degrees. I knew that I would warm up once I actually started running. There were a little over 300 runners and I positioned myself in the middle of the pack. Once we were off it took a few minutes to get positioned where I wanted to be. The course is a pretty one that runs along a river. We ran on dirt-snow packed and paved trails. There was snow on the ground and a few areas with icy patches. I felt alright running with a first mile time of 7:16. I was a little surprised because I felt like I was moving much slower than that. There were several rolling hills that I remembered well from last year:) Mile two was a little slower than the first because I was feeling kind of crappy. This is what I get for not running much over the past three weeks! Yuck, I felt a little like puking..and slowed down more. The good news is that only four people past me...all men:) The last half mile was the hardest and I felt like I was moving at snails pace. I saw the clock and it said 24:50 something. I stopped my Garmin and it read 24:40. I went online to check my stats and there were none for me! WTH! I am not sure what happened but it looks like I never ran! Bummer! The race was not chip timed and the volunteers had us tear off the bottom part of our bibs. I looked at the stats and noticed that according to the clock and my Garmin I took 2nd place for my age group:) It is a good thing that they did not give out medals or I would of been disappointed. Oh well, there are bigger tragedies in life.
Tomorrow I am running two virtual races. I am running P's birthday virtual run and Sefano's Black Knight Army 10K! Hopefully I will have those race reports posted soon:)
Happy running, biking, swimming, lifting and surfing! Cheers to you all!
Tomorrow I will catch up on reading blogs and commenting:)

  1. Ah man - that sucks! I started trying to NOT choose races that don't have chip timing - and this is one reason why. I still think you are the winner - so Congratulations! I can't even imagine running that fast - especially on dirt/snow/ice covered trails! Good job!

  2. No time? Boo! Sorry Julie but you're amazing for running that time in 14 degrees! 14 DEGREES! Wow! :)

  3. Oh, man! That's a bummer!! We all know that you ran & that you did a 2nd place finish again (though, since there is no written record, you can claim 1st. :) A 7:16 first mile is CRAZY fast, girl!!

Oh, so again I'll be back from Dec 4 - Dec 15. I won't have a car, so if we do find a race, I'll have to bribe my parents for a ride. How nerdy is that?! I hope we can find a little 5k or 10k! I haven't done any REALLY cold running lately and it's going to be a huge shock to my system! I also asked Julie C. (running with julie) if she'd would want to run with us .. she said if we find something in the cities, we can run as a group together! She does sub-20 minute 5ks and I think that's a bit fast for me :P It might just be fun to do a little girls-morning/chatty run instead of something competitive. I wan't to meet Julie & hope to see you!

Great job again, and good luck on your TWO races tomorrow!

    xoxo,
    A

p.s: I was just going through your list of PRs again and a few of ours are within seconds of each other! I hope you put the Napa to Sonoma half on your list of future races -- it's on mine!

  4. You are so speedy!! Way to go, Julie! And after not running much lately...wow! Good luck with tomorrow's races...I'm looking forward to reading about them.

Your little one with the camera cracks me up...it's funny seeing what they think is important enough to take pictures of. :)

  9. I had that happen (not in the results) during a race that wasn't chip timed (i think it was a jingle bell event even). I emailed the director with my garmin time and they added me in. somehow that made me feel better

  11. I always say I like to run in the cold, but 14 degrees for a 5k, I dunno if I would like THAT. I don't think I would warm up before the race was done.

Congrats on your time anyway. Bummer about the results.

  12. 4'56"/km is a fast pace and on an iced ground is faster again. Congrats. For us you are the 2nd in your age group and if the organization disagree, the Black Knight Army comes to conquer Anoka where you will be immediately appointed Queen!
I like your sunglasses. Enjoy your virtual races!

  13. I like the shirt. That is way too bad about your stats not showing up! Good luck on those virtual runs.

  14. Here I am "complaining" about 33 degrees while you ran in 15! You rock girl!

Sorry to hear your time wasn't official because you had a great time: congrats on that!

And I'm glad that you're back from your break.

  15. We all need little breaks now and then. Good job on the 5K, too bad you weren't listed on the list of runners. You know you were there. Can't wait to read your reports from today's virtual race.

  24. Cute green t-shirt, I love it!
Great job despite not having much running time. I can totally relate and it's just going to get busier this month. For some reason, I think my body is okay with the break but my brain says other wise!
Have a great week into December, Julie!

  25. Julie, if anybody deserves a rest from running (though it eventually makes us go crazy) it is you. Don't worry about getting back in the groove, you're a helluva runner and it won't take long.
Too funny about the camera, I know those types of photos all too well. You'll be happy to know that I failed the Julie School of Race Photography entrance exam yet again on Thursday, leaving my camera ZOOMED IN for half the race, damnit!
And hey, you were out there in that 5K to get moving again and you scored a cool little t-shirt, enjoy it!

  27. I've had that happen- been missig from the results. It's a bummer. The last time I emailed with my time and they added me which was nice. The t-shirt is super cute and you ran so well! Great job! Don't worry about your break- it's a good time of year to recharge a little bit and you've had a lot going on. Take care!

  28. Ok, I'm not big into race shirts, but I have to say that is the absolute cutest shirt I have ever seen - ever!!! I so need that (whaaaa). Great job, Chica! I'm such a cold weather wimp, I am uber impressed you get out in that stuff. Sorry you were MIA off the official results... I think that deserves a good 15 secs off your time :).
    Have a great week, girl!!

Oh, can you email me your mailing address? Need it for the exchange and I am way too lazy to dig through old emails :).
    xo

  32. Super cute shirt! Great job on your speedy time-your body is going faster with a little time off! And yikes, it looks cold! I know it's winter and normal and all but still!!!!
    Have a great week!

  33. Wow, bummer about your down cycle. Death in family, busy streak w/no time for running, dead cam batteries, no recorded 5K race time... sounds like bad planet alignment or microwave rays or something. It'll pass :-)

Geez, I can't believe you go out to run in those temps. Makes me feel like a real dog for whining at a balmy sub-32 (when I get a sore throat from panting)! How on earth do you keep your throat from getting ripped up by that raw air? And you're fast to boot. Wow.

  34. Nice job Julie. Too bad they seem to have lost you. Looks cold with all of the hats. Brrr.
